When you bought your BMW, you may have been told that oil changes for that type of vehicle were higher than most. Owners of non-European or luxury cars can get away with oil and filter changes for about $40. But the average cost for BMW 328i oil change, for instance, is between $135 and $175, says Repair Pal. Some estimates place this higher, up to $250.
Labor costs are estimated at between $45 and $65; parts are estimated between $90 and $110, not including taxes and fees. It’s important to note that the cost for an oil change may vary by location, your vehicle’s make and model, and your engine type. On its website, BMW says its oil changes start at $89.95, valid for 3 Series models with 4 cylinder engines only, using premium synthetic BMW oil. Prices include oil, parts and labor but additional costs may apply.
For the higher estimates noted above, you should be getting a little more than just an oil and filter change, such as a general tune-up/check-up, engine and emission tests, transmission tests, brake fluid top-offs, and tire rotations.
A note about oil: the price is higher than normal because BMW can’t tolerate cheap oil. Especially in a V8 BMW such as the 540i, which holds 7.5l of oil, it’s best to use a fully synthetic oil in a name brand like Castrol or similar. Here at Hance’s European, we offer BMW synthetic oil and filter change service to our customers.
If you bought your BMW new or certified, you should get the oil change for free, at least the first one.
However, beyond that, why pay the sky-high prices of the dealership just to change the oil? Your local mechanic can do it for cheaper, while giving you the same attention to detail and quality products as the dealer.
Benefits of Regular BMW Oil Changes
Wear and friction: these are the two leading causes of engine failure. One way you can prevent this is by staying on top of regular oil changes designed to reduce engine wear. Regular oil changes will:
- Give you better engine performance
- Keep your engine clean
- Lengthen your BMW’s lifespan
- Protect other engine parts
- Give you better gas mileage
- Protect the environment
- Help you pass your next vehicle emissions test
On top of scheduled oil and filter changes, it’s also important to keep up with regular service appointments to prevent unnecessary repairs.
